EPA ISSUES FOUNDRY SAND STATEMENT

Following a data review, EPA announced that it supports the use of ferrous and aluminum foundry sands in a number of common reuse applications. The statement is an outcome of a positive collaboration among EPA, AFS, and FIRST and is one of the Action Items requested at the 2005 Foundry Sand Stakeholders Meeting.

EPA Debuts State Toolkit

The Foundry Recycling Website is maintained by the metalcasting industry, through a 501(c)(3) organization known as FIRST ("Foundry Industry Recycling Starts Today"). FIRST and its industry and government partners participate in a wide range of market development activities. These include national research projects; specification development; education and technology transfer; and workshop delivery. Foundry Sand Soils Forum

 

FIRST & AFS teamed up with USDA and US EPA to present a workshop on the use of foundry sand in manufactured soils.  The Ohio State University hosted the forum at its Columbus, Ohio campus.  Recently completed USDA research indicates that most ferrous and aluminum foundry sands can safely be used to manufacture specialty soils.

FOUNDRY SAND INFO AT 2008 BU SUMMIT

 

The foundry industry's efforts to expand beneficial use were front and center at the recent 2008 Beneficial Use Summit.  A full session on USDA's foundry sand guideline development project drew much attention, while many other sessions included foundry sands in their examples and discussion.  FIRST/AFS and Kurtz Bros. both gave presentations on the progress being made toward industry goals.
